Heading north from Abidjan, the forest gradually gives way to savanna until you reach Korhogo, the largest city in the north of Côte d'Ivoire (in West Africa, French-speaking, the world's largest cocoa producer). It is regarded as the cultural centre of the Senufo people, and the surrounding countryside is dotted with craft villages, each with its own speciality. If you are interested in West African sculpture, textiles or crafts, Korhogo is a place you need to know.

A city on the northern savanna

Korhogo is the capital of the Savanes district and the Poro region, at an altitude of about 380 metres. At the 2014 census the city had some 243,000 inhabitants, making it the country's fourth-largest city and the largest in the north; at the 2021 census, the population including surrounding areas was about 440,000.

According to tradition, the city was founded by Nangui, a Senufo elder from Kong. In the late 19th century, Gbon Coulibaly succeeded his father Zwakognon as chief in 1894; in the same period, French Catholic missionaries established a church and school there. Today Korhogo is the main trading centre for Senufo farmers in the savanna region, who grow maize, cassava, millet and yams nearby; Fulani herders from the north also make it an important market for cattle, sheep and goats. The city has cotton, sisal and rice processing plants. During the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), Korhogo was also one of the host cities.

Senufo society and art

Senufo art is closely bound up with the Poro, the Senufo men's society, which preserves religious and historical traditions and uses statues, masks and other objects to guide the initiation of young people. Senufo women also have their own society, the Sandogo, associated with divination and related traditions.

Well-known Senufo masks include the kponyugu, which combines the features of several animals, and the kpelie, with its finely carved features, representing a female spirit; both traditionally appear at initiation rites and funerals. Today, Korhogo's artisans also produce carvings, brass figures and textiles for the tourist and art markets. When visiting, remember that some ritual objects and sacred groves are not open to outsiders, and asking before taking photos is basic courtesy.

Craft villages near the city

Village Speciality
Waraniéné Cotton spinning, weaving, embroidery and tailoring; also the largest village on the outskirts of Korhogo
Fakaha A community of painters known for painting on cloth
Koni Known for its traditional blacksmiths, who once smelted iron from local ore
Daleguesso Woodcarving, such as hornbill figures, masks, small Poro statues and musical instruments
Kapélé Beaded jewellery

Beyond crafts, shea butter (karité) is a key product of local women's cooperatives; the Natio Kobadara cooperative, for example, reported in 2024 that it had produced more than 30 tonnes. All these villages lie around Korhogo, so you can plan one or two days to visit them in turn and learn directly from the cooperatives or workshops who made each piece and with what materials.

Getting to Korhogo

Korhogo has an airport (code HGO) with domestic flights; you can also travel north by road from Abidjan or Bouaké. As for the climate, annual rainfall is about 1,240 mm, the rainy season runs roughly from May to October, and February to April is the hottest period.

One line for Asian readers

If you want to buy or collect Senufo crafts, the villages around Korhogo let you see the making process first-hand; understand the ritual context behind the pieces before talking about purchases, and you will earn more respect from local people.
