Where to stay in Abidjan: accommodation types and how to choose for business travellers

On a business trip to Côte d'Ivoire (in West Africa, French-speaking, the world's largest cocoa producer), where you stay often matters more than which hotel you pick. Abidjan is divided by lagoons and getting between districts takes time, so choosing the right area and type of accommodation directly affects how many meetings you can fit into a day. Options have multiplied in recent years; with a few principles in mind, you can avoid most pitfalls.

A growing range of options

Côte d'Ivoire's hotel industry has grown markedly over the past decade. Figures cited by Fraternité Matin in May 2024 show the country had more than 5,000 hotels with around 70,000 rooms, compared with 3,708 hotels and 53,117 rooms in 2020. In Abidjan, a February 2025 report put the number of hotels in the city at about 1,471. International and regional chains have continued to arrive, bringing a growing number of apart-hotels (apart-hôtel) that offer fully equipped flats with kitchens, suited to medium- and long-term stays.

Understanding star ratings: the official classification and ECOWAS categories

In January 2022, Côte d'Ivoire adopted a decree making classification standards for hotels and restaurants mandatory. Establishments are assessed against 175 criteria in nine categories — covering reception and service, rooms, food and beverage, equipment and safety, hygiene and sustainability, among others — for a maximum score of 520 points, and are awarded one to five stars according to the percentage obtained. Classified establishments display an official plaque (panonceau) showing a registration number and an expiry date.

At regional level, the tourism ministers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) adopted new accommodation classification rules in April 2023. These divide accommodation into nine types — hotels, motels, inns, guesthouses, apart-hotels, campsites, resorts, houseboats and eco-lodges — and give member states two years to transpose them into national law.

Accommodation type Best suited to
Business hotel Short business trips needing meeting rooms and transfers
Apart-hotel Stays of a week or more, if you want to prepare your own meals
Guesthouse / inn More flexible budgets and travellers wanting to be closer to local life
Short-let flat Long-term postings or teams staying together; check management arrangements carefully

How business travellers should choose

  1. Follow your meetings: the Plateau is regarded as Abidjan's business district. List where your main contacts are first, then choose accommodation in the same area or with easy access, to cut time lost in cross-district traffic.
  2. Think about the airport route: the airport is in the Port-Bouët district. For very short trips, or flights very early or very late, consider staying near the airport.
  3. Check the star plaque and its validity: the official plaque is one indicator of standards; under the rules, establishments must also pass an annual inspection to obtain a certificate of compliance.
  4. Choose by length of stay: for a three- or four-day trip, a hotel's services are the least hassle; for a week or more, an apart-hotel's kitchen and laundry facilities are more practical.
  5. Confirm the details in advance: for example, Wi-Fi reliability, whether airport transfers are offered, whether they can issue invoices suitable for company expense claims, and whether there is back-up power during outages.

One line for Asian companies

When booking for colleagues on a business trip, map out their meetings before choosing where they stay; in Abidjan, one fewer cross-district journey often means time for one more meeting.
