Climate and Seasons in Côte d'Ivoire: When Is the Best Time to Go?

Côte d'Ivoire (in West Africa, French-speaking, the world's largest cocoa producer) is warm all year round, so what really shapes your plans is not heat or cold but rain. When scheduling business trips, shoots or outdoor events, choosing the right month can save a great deal of trouble; even the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations was pushed back to early 2024 because it clashed with the rainy season.

Two climates, north and south

Encyclopaedia Britannica divides Côte d'Ivoire into two climate zones along roughly latitude 8° N:

  • The north (above 8° N): a southern savannah climate, with a dry season from roughly November to March and a single rainy season from roughly April to October.
  • The south (below 8° N, including Abidjan): two rainy seasons a year. The main one runs from May to July, and coastal areas have a second, shorter rainy season in October and November.
  • The western mountains: almost no distinct dry season.

Sources divide the seasons slightly differently. The US Library of Congress country study, for instance, splits the south into four seasons: the long rainy season from May to July, a short rainy season in August–September, a short dry season in October–November, and the long dry season from December to April. In practice, one point is common to all: in the south, May to July is the wettest period and December to February the driest.

Rainfall and temperature

Region Annual rainfall (approx., per Britannica)
North-east and centre 1,100 mm
North-west 1,500 mm
Abidjan 1,900 mm
Western mountains 2,000 mm

Figures differ between sources depending on the period covered and the weather stations used. Based on 1991–2020 climate data, Abidjan receives about 1,545 mm of rain a year; the wettest month is June, with about 375 mm over roughly 21 rainy days, and the driest is January, with only about 15 mm. On the coast, temperatures vary little from month to month, ranging daily from the low 20s to the low-to-mid 30s °C; the forest zone and the southern savannah have wider daily ranges. Sea temperatures near Abidjan range from about 25 °C (August) to 29 °C (April and May). As for humidity, Library of Congress data put average relative humidity at about 85% in the south and about 71% in the north; national average temperatures generally fall between 25 and 30 °C. What really makes north and south feel different is usually humidity and rainfall rather than temperature itself.

From December to February, the harmattan blowing in from the north-east brings dry air. Being higher, the north is also somewhat drier and cooler than the rest of the country.

When is the best time to go?

  • General business travel: any time of year, but from May to July allow extra time for traffic delays caused by heavy rain.
  • Outdoor activities, shoots and sightseeing: in the south, the drier December–February period is best; in terms of sunshine hours, February, March and November are relatively sunny.
  • Travelling to the north: the dry season runs roughly from November to March, but the harmattan blows from December to February and the air will be quite dry.
  • Timing around festivals: the Abissa festival in Grand-Bassam usually takes place in October–November, and the Baoulé Pâquinou around Easter; both can be factored in alongside the seasons.

One line for Asian readers

Think of Côte d'Ivoire as "summer all year, divided into wet and dry": avoid the south's long rainy season from May to July and your trip is already more than half a success.
