Abissa, the N'zima New Year

Abissa
✓ Verified · 2 sources

The traditional New Year festival of the N'zima Kotoko. It begins when the sacred drum Edo N'Gbolé is brought out of the forest and handed to the king, and lasts about two weeks. Its core values are forgiveness, reconciliation and unity.

During the festival anyone may speak freely, including about the king and officials, to air the year's grievances and welcome the new year together. It works as a social cleanser.

CE QUE VOUS VERREZ · What you will see
Late October to early November, the streets of Grand-Bassam fill with drums; men dress as women and women as men; people openly criticise the king and officials.
POURQUOI · So what
It shows that Akan kingship is still alive: king, queen mother and rituals coexist within the modern state.
SAVOIR-FAIRE · How to use it
Go to Grand-Bassam from late October to early November to see it. Ask before taking photos and respect sacred moments; explain the idea of forgiveness and criticism to guests first so they understand what they see.
Asian and European parallelsLike the 'world turned upside down' of European carnival, or the way temple festivals in Taiwan bind a community together.
Where to experience itPublic squares in Quartier France, Grand-Bassam.
