Mention reggae and most people think of Jamaica; but in West Africa, Côte d'Ivoire (in West Africa, French-speaking, the world's largest cocoa producer) is another major reggae stronghold. Two singers, Alpha Blondy and Tiken Jah Fakoly, have blended reggae rhythms with African languages and local melodies, giving "African reggae" a clear identity on the international music scene.

Alpha Blondy: taking reggae to Africa and the world

Alpha Blondy, born Seydou Koné on 1 January 1953 in Dimbokro, Côte d'Ivoire, is of Dioula heritage and was raised by his grandmother. In the 1970s he went to New York, where he majored in English at Hunter College and also took language classes at Columbia University.

He released his first album, Jah Glory, in the early 1980s, and it sold extremely well in Africa (sources differ slightly on the year of release). Cocody Rock!!!, recorded in Paris in 1984, brought him international distribution; Apartheid Is Nazism followed in 1985; and Jérusalem (1986) was recorded at Tuff Gong studios in Jamaica with Bob Marley's band, The Wailers. Masada, recorded in 1991 and released in 1992, includes the hit "Rendez-Vous", while Grand Bassam Zion (1996) went further by adding several languages, including Baoulé, Malinké and Wolof.

His band, the Solar System, is a large ensemble that adds African percussion and vocal harmonies to reggae. Language is one of his hallmarks: he sings mainly in Dioula, French and English, sometimes adding Arabic, Hebrew and other languages. In 2003 his album Merci was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album, and in 2005 the United Nations appointed him Ambassador of Peace for Côte d'Ivoire.

Tiken Jah Fakoly: a new generation from the north-west

Tiken Jah Fakoly, born Doumbia Moussa Fakoly on 23 June 1968 in Odienné in north-western Côte d'Ivoire, discovered reggae early. In 1987 he formed his first band, Djelys, building a following first in the region and then nationwide, and in 1998 he played his first concert in Paris, launching his international career.

His early work was released on cassette, and Mangercratie (1996) and Cours d'histoire (1999) established his reputation. His 2002 album Françafrique won the award for best reggae/ragga/world music album at France's Victoires de la Musique in 2003. Later releases include Coup de gueule (2004), L'Africain (2007) and Racines (2015), and in 2024 he released the unplugged album Acoustic. From the 2010s onwards he has continued to release new work steadily, such as African Revolution (2010), Dernier Appel (2014) and Le monde est chaud (2019). Since 2009 he has run the "One concert, one school" initiative to help build schools in Mali.

How to start listening

Both artists' work is easy to find on the main streaming platforms. Start by listening to a key album in full rather than just the singles, because whole albums show better how they combine reggae's syncopated rhythms with West African percussion, harmonies and multilingual vocals. If you understand French, follow the storytelling in the lyrics; if not, the melodies and rhythms are infectious on their own.

One line for Asian readers

If you enjoy reggae, start with the two albums in the table above and hear how the same rhythm takes on a different flavour in West African languages.
