Wax print cloth

The most important cloth in West African daily and ceremonial life. Abidjan's Uniwax is the leading factory, and it issues commemorative designs for major events, such as the 50th anniversary of independence, the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and the national team's champions' cloth.
Wax began in the 19th century as Dutch industrial imitations of Indonesian batik. They sold poorly in Indonesia, were sold in West Africa instead, and became 'African cloth'. Patterns have names and stories, so the cloth itself is a language.
