Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, Yamoussoukro

Basilique Notre-Dame de la Paix
✓ Verified · 2 sources

Built by Houphouët-Boigny in his home town of Yamoussoukro and modelled on St Peter's, it was constructed in 1985–1989 and consecrated by Pope John Paul II on 10 September 1990. It is often listed among the largest churches in the world. Visits are paid and guided.

It was the founding father's personal legacy project and part of 'bringing the capital home'. It was built during an economic crisis, and its cost was hotly debated abroad.

CE QUE VOUS VERREZ · What you will see
On the grassland of a small town, a domed church almost the size of St Peter's in Rome suddenly appears.
POURQUOI · So what
It stands for the president's ambition, the place of Catholicism in the south, and the politics of grand projects.
SAVOIR-FAIRE · How to use it
A must on any visit to Yamoussoukro. Talk about its scale, stained glass and history, but when the cost comes up, be mindful of how your hosts feel about the founding father.
